What if the most eco-friendly building material is the one you never have to replace?

This simple question gets to the heart of sustainability in construction. The greenest construction isn’t just about using recycled content or bamboo floors – it’s about using
longer-lasting, high-performance materials. When your buildings and finishes stand the test of time, you need fewer repairs and replacements. Fewer repairs mean less material waste, lower overall cost, and a significantly reduced environmental impact over a building’s life.

Durability is the New Sustainability

Every repair or renovation consumes new materials and energy while creating waste from the old. Using durable, advanced products from the start breaks this cycle. A floor that stays level and intact for decades or a waterproofing layer that never fails prevents tons of debris and replacement materials from ever being needed. In other words, building it right the first time is both economically and ecologically smart. For example, Avalon’s R&D team focuses on making products that stay flexible and strong even in harsh conditions – ensuring structures last longer with minimal maintenance. Indeed, structures protected with these solutions have a long service life even in freezing winters, hot summers, or salty coastal air – translating to fewer touch-ups and a lighter footprint on the planet.

(Technical note: “Freeze-thaw cycles” refer to repeated freezing and thawing, which can crack less resilient materials. Avalon’s products are formulated to withstand these cycles, among other stresses.)

Smarter Tile Adhesives: Light, Strong, Flexible

Tile installations are meant to last for decades, and Avalon’s AVAGEL and AVAGEL AERO S2 adhesives make sure they do. These next-generation tile adhesives are designed for outstanding durability and ease of use. Unlike ordinary mortars, they use a special “gel” technology that ensures full coverage under each tile with less effort. This means no hollow spots and a stronger bond, eliminating future loose tiles. The adhesive stays put on walls without sagging (thanks to a thixotropic, or non-slip, formula) yet remains easy to spread, ensuring 100% contact with the tile backside. It also remains flexible after curing, so it can absorb building movements or vibrations without cracking – an important trait for long-term performance.
These tile adhesives give installers more working time as well. With extended open times (the time you can still lay a tile after spreading adhesive) and long adjustment times, there’s no rush. More time to work means fewer mistakes and less wasted material. Avalon goes the extra mile by testing these adhesives under real-world stress conditions to ensure they hold up in practice, not just in the lab. In fact, AVAGEL’s adhesion was tested with unique strain simulations to guarantee durability on site – meaning once your tiles are in place, they’re going to stay put for the long haul.
High-performance with eco-benefits: The AVAGEL AERO S2 variant adds a clever sustainability twist. It’s formulated to be lightweight and high-yield, so a bag of AERO S2 weighs much less than a conventional adhesive bag while covering more area. Each 15 kg bag of AVAGEL AERO S2 provides about 60% more coverage than a typical 25 kg bag of standard adhesive. That’s fewer bags to produce, transport, and carry – reducing transport emissions and easing handling on site. By choosing a lighter product that goes further, you cut down on packaging and freight, all while getting top-tier performance. It’s strength and flexibility packaged in an eco-friendly way.

(Technical note: “Flexible, class S2” adhesive means it can tolerate a lot of deformation (bending or movement) without losing its grip. This flexibility is crucial for surfaces that expand with heat or vibrate – preventing cracks or de-lamination.)

Self-Leveling Floors that Stand the Test of Time

Uneven floors often lead to premature wear in finishes and even structural stress. HERCULES F10, Avalon’s self-leveling mortar, tackles this by creating a perfectly flat, rock-solid base for any flooring. “Self-leveling” means that once mixed and poured, the mortar flows and settles by itself to an even surface, filling in low spots – you don’t have to manually trowel it flat. The result is a smooth, level floor with minimal effort. But HERCULES F10 doesn’t just level – it hardens fast and strong. In a short time, it achieves very high strength (around 40 MPa of compressive strength), so it can handle heavy loads and traffic without cracking. This high strength and abrasion resistance mean your floor won’t easily dent, dust, or wear out even in demanding environments.
HERCULES F10 is also formulated to be moisture-resistant, and it can be used indoors or outdoors, even on substrates that aren’t fully dry. This is important for longevity: moisture in floors is a common cause of failure (it can lead to mold or weaken the material), but a moisture-tolerant underlayment prevents these issues. Once cured, the surface is so durable that it can even be left as the finished floor itself in utility areas – it’s tough enough to walk on outside without any additional tile or coating on top. (Of course, you can cover it with wood, tile, or carpet as you wish; it’s compatible with almost any floor covering.)
By providing a stable, long-lasting foundation, this self-leveling mortar ensures that the visible floor layers (your tiles, hardwood, etc.) can also live out their full lifespan. There’s no need to rip out and redo floors due to subfloor issues, which again means less waste over time. It’s one of those hidden heroes: you might not see HERCULES F10 once the project is done, but you’ll feel the difference decades later when your floor is still solid and even.

Waterproofing That Withstands Everything

Water is often called the arch-enemy of buildings. Once it seeps in through a poor barrier, it can cause rot, corrosion, mold, and a cascade of repairs. Avalon’s AQUA BARRIERA line – including FUTURA, NANO SMART, and ONE – is engineered to keep water out and stay intact for years, even under tough conditions. These high-performance waterproofing coatings act like a flexible skin over surfaces, preventing water penetration and protecting the structure beneath.
What makes them special for sustainability? They prevent damage before it happens, which means you won’t be tearing out soggy drywall or rusted rebar down the line. Plus, they’re designed to last, so you apply them once and enjoy decades of peace of mind. Here are some standout qualities of Avalon’s waterproofing products:
  • Crack-bridging capability: The coatings can stretch and bridge over small cracks in the substrate without breaking. Even if the base concrete or screed develops hairline cracks (for example, due to shrinkage or slight movements), the waterproof layer stays continuous and intact. AQUA BARRIERA FUTURA, for instance, is certified to bridge cracks even at low temperatures down to -15 °C. (In plain terms, it remains rubbery enough in the cold to cover gaps.) This prevents water from sneaking through cracks that would normally form in brittle, old-style membranes.
  • Stands up to weather extremes: These products remain flexible and effective in both scorching heat and freezing cold. AQUA BARRIERA NANO SMART stays flexible at temperatures as low as -20 °C, so it won’t turn brittle in winter. They are also UV-resistant – crucial for exposed rooftops or balconies where years of sunlight can degrade lesser materials. Decades of sun exposure won’t break them down, meaning you won’t have to re-apply the waterproofing frequently.
  • Thin but mighty layers: Avalon’s waterproofing tech achieves excellent protection with very thin coatings. Just a 2 mm layer of FUTURA is enough to fully waterproof a surface reliably. NANO SMART is so effective that only a 2.5 mm coating provides the same protection against chloride salts as a 30 mm thick layer of standard concrete cover. This efficiency means you use less material for the same (or better) result – which is both cost-effective and eco-friendly. A lighter, thinner application also translates to less weight added to the building (and less material to transport).
  • Chemical and salt resistance: Beyond just water, these membranes resist other forms of attack. NANO SMART, for example, withstands aggressive agents like chlorine (from pool water), de-icing salts, sulphates, and even carbon dioxide from air pollution. By shielding concrete from these corrosive elements, the waterproofing extends the life of the structure significantly. For a coastal home exposed to salt air or a parking garage subjected to de-icing salt, this kind of chemical durability is a game-changer for longevity.
  • Excellent adhesion (and less teardown): These coatings bond strongly to all kinds of surfaces – from concrete and masonry to existing tiles. This means you can apply them as a retrofit without needing to remove the old substrate. For instance, you could rejuvenate an old terrace by applying a coat of FUTURA or NANO SMART right over the existing tiles, then lay new tiles on top. No demolition required! That saves time and avoids generating piles of waste. Strong adhesion also ensures the membrane won’t peel or detach over time – it stays firmly stuck, doing its job for years.
  • Safe and versatile solutions: Avalon even offers specialized formulas like AQUA BARRIERA ONE that are safe for contact with drinking water and capable of handling water pressure from either side. This one-component (just add water) coating is ideal for waterproofing the inside of water tanks, reservoirs, or underground concrete walls where water might push from the outside (negative pressure). Even in these demanding scenarios, it creates a lasting seal. Using a product safe enough for potable water is a testament to its low toxicity – an added eco-benefit for sensitive applications.
By using these advanced waterproofing materials, builders ensure that water damage is virtually off the table. The structure stays dry and sound, and you avoid the environmental cost of constant repairs, mold remediation, or material replacement from leaks. It’s a proactive approach: invest in a quality waterproofing layer now, and save tons of resources (literally) by not having to fix water damage later.

Better Materials Today for a Greener Tomorrow

Choosing better building materials today – like Avalon’s durable adhesives, levelers, and waterproofers – means creating structures that last for generations. When you build with longevity in mind, you’re not only saving yourself headaches and repair bills, you’re also doing the planet a favor. Every extra year that a tile stays firmly in place, a floor remains level, or a roof keeps water out is a year you’re not sending old material to a landfill or manufacturing a replacement.
In the big picture, sustainability in construction is achieved one smart choice at a time. It’s the lightweight bag of adhesive that cuts cement use by 60%. It’s the crack-proof waterproofing that keeps a foundation solid and dry. It’s the ultra-strong subfloor that never needs to be redone. These improvements add up. By embracing long-lasting, high-performance materials like Avalon’s, we build a future where buildings don’t just go up green – they stay green. After all, the most sustainable structure is the one you don’t have to rebuild.
Build it once, build it right, and enjoy the benefits for years to come – that’s eco-friendly building done right.
